Below are a few of my favorite books. I read about 40 books a year, on average, mostly fiction. The books that follow are sorted by author and are not meant to be a complete list of the books I like. To rate as a fiction favorite, the plot must be engaging and believable, and the prose written flawlessly.

My Books

Getting Started in Chart Patterns is as entertaining as it is educational. An easy read for those new to chart patterns as well as for professionals that want additional trading tips. Discusses many actual trades. Start reading this one first.

Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns, Second Edition, is the best reference book available on chart and event patterns. Over 1,000 pages packed with statistics for both bull and bear markets, identification guidelines, focus on failures, trading tactics, and sample trade for each pattern. Read this one second.

Trading Classic Chart Patterns is mostly a reference book that discusses a scoring system for chart patterns, but has five narrative chapters on trendlines, support and resistance, stops, and trading mistakes. Read this one third.

Favorite finance books

Options for the Stock Investor by James B. Bittman. This (the first edition) is the best introductory options book I’ve read. Shown above is the 2nd edition.

How To Buy Stocks

How to Buy Stocks by Louis Engel (no picture is available). This is another stock market introduction book, one of the first I bought. An entertaining read. I have the 1963 edition.

Way of the Turtle by Curtis Faith. This book gave me ideas about improving my trading, how the markets work, and the turtle methods. It’s a good review for system traders.

The Master Swing Trader by Alan S. Farley. This is not an easy read because the author invents so many terms. If you can push past the learning curve, he gives many trading tips.

A Short Course in Technical Trading by Perry J. Kaufman. His discussion of volatility and a volatility stop is worth the price of the book by itself.

How Charts Can Help You in the Stock Market by William L. Jiler

When to Sell by Justin Mamis and Robert Mamis. A how-to book on, well, when to sell. Shown is the updated edition of the book I read.

Technical Analysis for Dummies by Barbara Rockefeller. Barbara cites many sources as she steps you through learning technical analysis. She has lots of interesting trading tips. My copy has a dozen post-it notes sticking out.

Stock Market Primer by Claude N. Rosenberg, Jr. This is a wonderful introduction to the stock market and fundamentals. An easy read.

One Up on Wall Street by John Rothchild. This is an entertaining read that will make you think of the fundamentals before trading.

The Handbook of Portfolio Mathematics... by Ralph Vince. If you are heavily into mathematics and want to learn about portfolio theory, this is the book.

A Few Favorite Fiction Books

Jonathan Livingston Seagull

by Richard Bach. No picture is available.

Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke. One of many good books by him.

Airframe by Michael Crichton. This is one of many of his books I consider good.

The Street Lawyer by John Grisham

The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris

Colossus

by D.F. Jones. No picture is available. The book was made into a movie called The Forbin Project. The two sequels to this book are also good.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Puppet on a Chain

by Alistair MacLean. No picture is available, meaning it is an old book.

The Way To Dusty Death

by Alistair MacLean. No picture is available.

Along Came a Spider by James Patterson

2nd Chance by James Patterson with Andrew Gross

Anthem by Ayn Rand

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. This is great except for the 75 pages where Galt gives a speech.

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

Nothing Lasts Forever by Sidney Sheldon.

Mixed Blessings

by Danielle Steel. No image is available.

The Love Machine by Jacqueline Susann. A talented author who died too young. I enjoy Valley of the Dolls too.

A Few Favorite Nonfiction Books

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer

How to Write Romances by Phyllis Taylor Pianka

Our Story by The Quecreek Miners, Jeff Goodell

Flight by Chris Kraft. If you are into NASA, then this is a good book but I could not find it on Amazon. It is an autobiography of space flight.

Venturing Underground: The New Speleo's Guide

by Ben Lyon. No image is available

How to Tell a Story by Peter Rubie and Gary Provost. This is a how-to-write book.

Creating Unforgettable Characters by Linda Seger. Another writing book.

Creating Characters by Dwight V. Swain

Techniques of the Selling Writer by Dwight V. Swain. The best how-to-write book I have read.
